Good, Bad, or Ugly I wanted to come up with a new style of drum shell. My idea was to use up some of the 1/2" Maple/Apple Euro plywood that I had left over from some kitchen cabinets I made. I decided to cut out solid rings of it and stack them. I have never seen another plywood shell like this one (maybe for good reason?). So... consisting of fourteen 9 ply sheets of 1/2" plywood with solid maple bearing edges on top and bottom - I present to you PLYZILLA™!
I must say that I am very pleasantly surprised at the "tap tone" and resonance of this shell. It is also as stiff as, well, a board. There is no flex in this shell. As always, if my description above doesn't make sense or if someone else wants to know how to make one of these I will be happy to do a tutorial. Also, if this has already been done before I would like the info and I will move on to another idea for a new kind of shell. Hasta la pasta!
