Love the clamps ... don't know why it just makes me laugh to see the hodge-podge of clams all around the drum. Good stuff!

James,

Which orchestra were you playing with (as a SE CT native)? I'm curious. Nice idea for an orchestral "field" drum. I'm doing kind of the same thing myself....

Wallingford Symphony. I just wish I'd had either of these 16" snare drums last year when we performed "Peter And The Wolf" - they would've been perfect for the last movement!

James,

I saw you were going to install wire snares. Have you thought of gut?

That's a very good suggestion. Somewhere around here, I've got a brochure from a drum company that builds rope-tension drums (the name escapes me at the moment), and they offered gut snares as a stand-alone item. I'm not sure how many strands I'd be able to affix to the strainer and butt plate I'm using, but it's certainly worth a shot.

I suppose I could also contact Grover, to find out if they could special-order me a set.

Cooperman makes rope tension drums. I think they sell what you are looking for.

Yep, Cooperman - that's the one.

That's one big sumbitch. Where did you get the claws? I've seen those on Alibaba, but never for sale anywhere.

james, that looks awesome. i too cant wait to hear what that thing sounds like. i dont think you needed the beer can for size comparison. just take a look at that strainer. that thing looks a like a set of tweezers on that drum. very nice drum though, and way to think outside the norm. good luck with your drum!

I've actually done a few - a five-piece bop kit (w/5.5x14 snare), and a 4.75x16 snare drum. I've got one more purple drum in the works - a 10x16 "micro" bass drum, which I'm dyeing to match the bop kit, so the toms can do double duty and I won't need to build an entire microkit in a new color. After that, tho, my next project (whatever that will be) is going to be red or black - I'm pretty much "purpled out" at this point. ;)

Claws, lugs, and strainer/butt are from Drum Foundry, as is the dye ("deep violet").

Claws: BC015

Lugs: LBD004

Strainer: ST03

Butt plate: BU05

The NOS Slingerland snares are a tight fit on undersized modern-day shells, which is why I opted to use the adjustable butt plate (and matching strainer) on this drum, even tho they're relatively small. I want to be able to tighten or loosen the snares in either direction easily, to keep them centered on the head. I tried a set of 15" wires, and they were OK, but didn't sound as good as the 16s.

I'm tempted to order some Patterson cable snares, but something for a 16" drum would be a special order item, and even if I could free up the cash, I don't know if I'd get them before the end of the competition.
