I just realized I never shared this build. It's a 18x32 Powwow drum that I built for one of my former grad school professors. She works with native men that are incarcerated and have substance use issues. She leads groups based on "the red road to...

I used a drill on both of mine. Other than the smell of burning flesh, it was quick and clean.

One thing we discovered was that it was easier for the kids to drill their holes in the dry rawhide than use a punch. The kids made their own templates for marking hole spacing and then I let them loose with cordless drills and the drill press. Went...

    And I bet I watched this video a dozen times before heading the drum: <div style="position:relative;height:0;padding-bottom:56.25%"><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/T-dua9QFhcA?ecver=2" width="640" height="360" frameborder="0"...

Awesome RandyB! I used pine on both drums. The first drum, the 29", was radiata pine, 1". The 32" drum was made from dimensional lumber 2x8s. I used some modified ratchet straps to clamp during glue up. Both drums have cow hides and the 32" has cow...

Where do you get the hide from and what animal? Did you use ratchet straps to hold it all together when you glued up? I hunt and I want to try making my own rawhide for drum skins. But I worry it will be a messy job. Not sure how much longer my...

Beautiful pow wow drum and stand. What type of wood did you use? We just used spruce from the lumber yard. The reason we turned the inside of the drum was to make the shell a bit thinner and lighter. I think if we built another pow wow drum I would...

That sounds like a great project with your students! I didn't attempt to turn the inside of the ones I built. Here's a picture of the first one. It was gifted to the same professor/mentor as the above pictured drum went to.

Very nice. I built Native american drums with my students 2 year ago and a local elder came and taught them a number of songs. We also did 2 big pow wow drums and gifted them to local bands. I had a lot of fun doing that with the kids. We tried...

I also had to ship it from NC to WY, and it cost more than the drum did. My son was totally bummed to see it leave the house

Final detail - lavender-colored grosgrain ribbon. You know, because it sounds better. ;)

Thanks! Of the pictures posted here, the last one ("Ludwig batter side head") is probably the most accurate.

That's tiny and cool! Sounds great! In the first picture of the shell my monitor gives it a greenish hue, but not in the finished pictures. I dig the heritage maple look of the finished snare.

Thanks! I still need to get some 1" or 1-1/4" tension rods for it. I got 7/8" originally, but those were too short with the Ludwig heads, and the 1-3/8" ones I got are just short of topping out. I've probably learned more from this build -...

Very nice, James! Gotta love when a project 'just' comes together, even when it takes more than just a bit of finessing...more satisfying that way, especially with minimum expense! (PS - I'm still enjoying the shit outta those quick beats!)

Got a Ludwig batter side head as well. Not as shallow as the snare-side Ludwig, and not much shallower than the Evans head I tried, but every little bit helps.
